CHROMATE CONVERSION COAT
Also referred to as chem film, alodine and iridite. Chromate conversion is a thin coating that can be used as a final finish or as a primer to paints and adhesives. During the chem film process, the surface of the metal undergoes a chemical reaction that gives a general, light protection of a substrate against oxidation that does not dimensionally alter the part.

TYPES OF CHEMICAL CONVERSIONS
The most common chem film spec is MIL-DTL-5541. MIL-DTL-5541 contains the option for type I, a clear or yellow hexavalent chromate, or type II, a clear hexavalent-free (trivalent) chromate, on aluminum and class 1A or class 3. Class 1A is a thicker and darker coating that provides a high-grade corrosion protection as a final finish to the aluminum and improves the adhesion of a paint finish. Class 3 is a thinner, lighter weight coating that allows the aluminum substrate to retain its conductivity while maintaining corrosion protection.
A clear hexavalent chromate is available for copper substrates as a tarnish resistant film.
