MASKING USING COPPER PLATING
Cyanide copper prevents the diffusion of carbon and or nitrogen during atmosphere carburizing/nitriding. Some applications (typically gears and bearing surfaces) require a form of carburizing or nitriding on steel substrates. INCERTEC offers a high build cyanide copper plating to mask off the surfaces that do not require the carburizing or nitriding.
HOW THIS IS DONE AT INCERTEC
1st Method: The part is masked in the area that requires the heat treatment, copper plating is applied, the part is unmasked and sent to the customer or heat treater for the carburizing/nitriding service. The part is then sent back to INCERTEC to remove the copper plating. After the plating has been stripped back, the part is selectively heat treated in that non-plated area.
2nd Method: Copper plating is applied to the entire part and sent to customer. The customer machines off the copper plating exposing the surface that requires heat treatment for the carburizing/nitriding. The part is then sent back to INCERTEC to remove the copper plating. After the plating has been stripped back, the part is selectively heat treated in that non-plated area.
Both methods are acceptable. Contact us today to see which is a better fit for your application.
